RYE, N.Y. Students from Rye's Milton and Midland schools and their family members will walk to class Wednesday as part of International Walk to School Day.
Parents will lead walking school buses as kids from the two schools mark the special day, which drew participants from more than 4,000 schools across the country last year. Schools in 40 nations around the world also participated.
Walk to School Day raises awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasizes the importance of physical activity among children. It draws attention to pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and environmental awareness.
Osborn Elementary School students participated on Tuesday.
The Rye YMCA and the Safe Routes to School Committee are sponsoring the event.
