Rye Country Day Hosts 'Generosity Week'

RYE, N.Y. - Rye Country Day's upper school students embodied the holiday spirit of giving last week during the school's annual "Generosity Week".

The week-long event, which actually kicked off on Dec. 8, officially ran from Dec. 12 through Dec. 16. "Gen Week, as the kids call it, is all about advocacy, awareness, and personal service", Rye Country Day Director of Community Service Anita Walsh said. "It is amazing what our groups have accomplished."

Walsh went out to describe the event as "very popular" among the students.

The event began with the school's monthly visit to the Spinal Cord Injury Unit at James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx. The next day members from the upper school's junior class and Hands On club made specially designed wheelchair blankets for some of the hospital patients.

The events put together by the Upper School students include volunteering at soup kitchens, numerous food sales, coat drives, letter writing campaigns, petition drives and more.

One of the events highlighted by Walsh was a craft party for the Port Chester Carver Center's Adventurer Class.

"The party included a wonderful dinner donated by Flik," Walsh said, "Our dining room staff also generously donated their time to make the celebration special for the Carver kids".

According to Walsh, over 27 of the school's groups and programs participated during the week.

"The kids just jumped right in and did it," Walsh said, "We are so proud of all of them".
