RYE, N.Y. More than 25 high school students from Mamaroneck, Rye, Harrison, Rye Brook and Tarrytown participating in the Rye Arts Center's High School Arts Council collaborated with students from the Hispanic Resource Center (HRC) in Mamaroneck and created a mural that honors the center's mission to help Hispanic immigrants acclimate to the community.
With the help of Port Chester artist Tova Snyder the students came up with a concept that depicts a tree with outstretched branches.
"It has to do with putting down roots and spreading out," Hackley student Amelia Dobronwi said. "Once a tree is planted it's permanent."
The students came together and completed the majority of the work on Saturday inside the HRC and gathered together again after school on Wednesday to put on the finishing touches. Snyder commended the students for their focus and ability to come up with such a complete mural in such a small window.
"It usually takes me three days to mix the paint when I make a mural, so to do this in one day is really amazing," Snyder said. "For me it was one of the most amazing residencies I've ever done."
HRC Executive Director Zoe Colon said that when the Rye Arts Center approached her about the project she was thrilled.
"I thought it was a great opportunity to get together and learn from each other," Colon said.
HRC Program coordinator Jirandy Martinez echoed Colon and spoke about how students from different cultural backgrounds were able to collaborate and come together.
"It was really great to see teamwork between two different cultures," Martinez said. "The students really came together and made a beautiful mural."
