The board unanimously appointed Kenneth Silver, a former president of the Blind Brook-Rye Board of Education, to replace Timothy Costello, who officially exits the district Aug. 1 after nearly seven years.
Silver has a wealth of experience, with a resume that boasts more than two decades of experience as an assistant superintendent throughout the county. This experience, and the work he has put in as a math and business teacher before that, are traits that Interim Superintendent Judith Johnson – who will be replaced by Hamilton on Aug. 11 – thinks will prove instrumental.
“Prior (to his time as an assistant superintendent), Ken was an adjunct professor in the Graduate School of Education at Pace University, teaching school budgeting, finance and administration,” she said in a statement. “With his well-rounded understanding of stakeholder dynamics and business, he will be able to move forward with managing measurable improvement for Mount Vernon.”
An active member of the Association of School Business Official, Silver has also served as a business manager for an architecture firm that primarily concentrated on school renovation and construction. He has a master’s degree from Pace University in educational administration and supervision and a professional diploma in administration, policy and urban education from Fordham University.
“I am deeply motivated by the history of Mount Vernon, as well as its diversity and perseverance,” he said. “I share the community’s hope to make a difference in the district by contributing to help persevere and build upon its strengths, while making the necessary decisions to improve the quality of education.”
