RYE, N.Y. - Fourth grade students from Rye's Milton School got a special treat on Friday afternoon as they visited Rye Historical Society's Square House as part of their education on Colonial times.
While each fourth grade class from Milton School got a chance to visit the Square House, Friday's visit belonged to Shannon Gold's students.
"Coming here gives the students a chance to see what life was like in the Colonial times," Gold said. "They get to learn more about how children lived back then and put themselves in their shoes."
According to Rye History's Education Curator Jennifer Plick, all three of Rye's elementary school students are offered a hands-on learning experience through the historical society.
"Some of them come to visit the Square House and I actually go into their classroom and do different programs as well," Plick said. "I'll bring objects from our collection and we look at a show and tell, a now versus then."
Plick said that while the majority of the students enjoy learning about the historical artifacts, it's knowing that historical figures like George Washington and John Adams visited the Square House that really wows them.
"When you tell them that John Adams was here and George Washington was here, I think most of them are into the fact that they will be in rooms that these very famous people were in and that they came to their town over 200 years ago," Plick said.
Plick spoke about how these types of hands-on learning experiences are valuable to young students.
"Instead of a looking at some information in a book they are in the physical spaces and looking at artifacts used by people," Plick said. "It makes it more real and tangible."
Gold echoed Plick and talked about the value of a place like the Square House.
"It's great that the kids can come here and learn about the importance of the Square House and what it means to their community," Gold said.
