Freshmen Start New Year At Rye High School

RYE, N.Y. – School started Wednesday at Rye High School, and for freshmen such as Brianna Camacho, it’s a whole new experience. “It’s different, not confusing or anything, just … different,” said Camacho, who was sitting outside after school waiting for a ride.

Student Vincent Pignato said ninth grade is similar to eighth grade except for one change: “Teachers seem more intense. They seem more strict, like there’s no tolerance for lateness,” he said.

New and continuing students can join more than 30 clubs and organizations, and freshman Blair Maloney is wasting no time. She says she plans to join Student Awareness and Adopt-A-Grandfriend so she can visit the Wartburg Adult Care Community in Mount Vernon and do activities with a resident once a month.

On the other end of the high school spectrum, senior Taylor Khan is starting off her year already knowing she has secured a full scholarship to Webster University in Missouri to study communications. “It’s annoying being here,” she said.

Back to School Night is set for Sept. 27 from 7 to 10 p.m.

Parents and students can meet new Schools Superintendent Frank Alvarez at the first Board of Education meeting of the school year, scheduled for 8 p.m. Sept. 11 at Rye Middle School, 3 Parsons Road, Rye.
