Benjamin Araujo of Eastchester, who plays trombone for the Eastchester Middle School band under the direction of teacher Mark Dodge, had his latest composition “A Postcard from New York City” performed by some of the world’s most talented musicians at Geffen Hall on Wednesday, Jan. 18.

Middle School Principal Scott Wynne praised Araujo for his initiative and talent, having previously written songs for the middle school band and before stepping up to the big stage with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.

“Having one of the greatest, most prestigious orchestras in the world perform music that he wrote specifically for them is an experience and honor that cannot be overstated,” he said.

Araujo has been involved with music since he was 9-years-old, performing in several operas while playing both piano and trombone. He is now participating in the Philharmonic’s “Very Young Composers” weekend outreach program, where he learns about composing music from teachers and professional musicians

“I had the privilege of being in the audience to hear Benjamin’s opus,” Eastchester Schools Superintendent Walter Moran III said. “Having one’s original composition performed by the New York Philharmonic is a rare and outstanding achievement. What amazing recognition this is, the district is incredibly proud of him.”
