RYE BROOK, N.Y. – The police presence has been stepped up and other immediate steps taken to ensure the safety of Blind Brook schools in response to the Newtown, Conn., school tragedy .
The Board of Education decided on the emergency measures at a special meeting this week. The heightened police presence will be in place on an interim basis at both Ponterio Ridge Street and the Middle and High schools. Officers will be on campus as a precaution while long-term measures are determined.
In addition, the district is hiring a consultant to provide a full-scale safety and security audit of the district in terms of physical and personnel requirements.
Last, the district will review all current safety plans and make sure they are being followed – especially securing all entrances to the buildings.
“Raising the level of security is a complex process,” Superintendent William Stark said in a letter to parents this week. “It will require support from the community,” he said, adding that all board members, employees, students and parents will have to participate in providing such support.
Stark asked anyone who has concerns or recommendations for making each school more secure to email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 914-937-3600, ext. 3022.
