Cliffside Park Students Learn About Holocaust From Former Teacher

CLIFFSIDE PARK, N.J. -- Harriet Raphael -- a former teacher at Cliffside Park's School No. 3, whose mother survived multiple concentration camps -- stopped by to speak to the sixth-grade students about the Holocaust.

The students recently finished reading the popular Jane Yolen award-winning novel "Devil's Arithmetic," in which a modern girl experiences the horrors of a concentration camp. They then watched the film version.

The final activity was a Raphael's presentation about her parents' survival of the Holocaust. Her mother was 14 when she was first taken by the Germans. She survived several concentration camps, and when she was liberated from Auschwitz, she weighed just over 70 pounds.

Her father worked in one of the factories of Oskar Schindler, the man whose story of bravery was told in "Schindler's List," which won seven Academy Awards. Her father became a tailor in America and sewed dresses for two different presidents' wives, Jackie Kennedy and "Lady Bird" Johnson.
