Group Aims to Help Adoptees With Art in Rye Brook

RYE BROOK, N.Y. - Rye Brook's Forever Families Through Adoption (FFTA) has created a group catered toward fostering the artistic expression of adolescent adoptees called "Art for Adoptees."

The group was created by FFTA's Becca Leitman and will be co-led by FFTA employee Megan Ice. For Leitman, an adoptee herself, the program is the culmination of her professional experience as both an artist and a social worker.

"I've always wanted to incorporate art with adoption somehow," Leitman said. "I felt like there was a need in the community for a program for adoptees."

According to Leitman, the goal of the group is to allow children to have fun participating in art activities while getting to know peers and adults who share the experience of domestic or international adoption.

"We're not teaching art at all, we're making art together as a group," Leitman said. "Through art you can address issues of identity. Through things like mask making we can address what is the identity that we put forth and what is the identity that we hold inside."

While the art group will take place at Crawford Park Mansion in Rye Brook, it is open to all Westchester residents and adoptees. Participants will need parent/guardian written approval to register and all services are provided free of charge.

"I'm really excited about it," Leitman said. "This is the culmination of everything I've ever wanted to do."

The group will meet bi-monthly for 60 minute sessions starting on Wednesday, March 28 from 4 to 5 p.m.
