Republicans Take Lead In Rye City Council Race

UPDATED 11:55 P.M. RYE, N.Y. -- Republican candidates for City Council took the lead in the Tuesday's election, with five out of 14 districts reporting.

With 35 percent of the total results in, Republican Julie Killian had 25 percent of the votes, Republican Terry McCartney had 22 percent, Republican Kirstin Bucci had 22 percent, Democrat Meg Cameron had 14 percent, Democrat Shari Punyon had 11 percent and Independent Jason Mehler had 6 percent.

Six candidates were seeking three open seats in this year's race.

Republicans Kirstin Bucci, Terry McCartney and Julie Killian ran on the Rye United campaign platform. Bucci is a Wall Street equity research analyst and Osborn School volunteer. McCartney is an attorney and coach in Rye youth sports. Killian is the only incumbent who was seeking re-election, and is a former Wall Street credit analyst.

Democrats Meg Cameron and Shari Punyon ran on the Renew Rye platform. Cameron helped found the Rye Record and is active in a number of organizations including the Rye Arts Center and the Rye Youth Council. Punyon is a technical writer and is involved in the Friends of the Rye Nature Center and Friends of Rye Town Park.

Mehler ran as an Independent. He is a realtor and former accountant who serves on the Rye Town Park Advisory Committee and the Rye Recreation Commission.

Major issues in the race included keeping spending down, restoring civility to the City Council, and protecting Rye's rights with regards to the Playland Amusement Park redevelopment.
