"I want to be part of the process to 'Make Rye Better,'" Mehler said in a statement. "My extensive financial background and understanding of budgeting, employment issues, financial statement and cash flow analysis will be a great addition in helping the council with its essential task of fiscal accountability."
Mehler has lived in Rye since 2000. He is a full-time Realtor with Better Homes and Gardens Rand Realty, where he has worked since 2003. Before that, he worked as a senior accountant, divisional controller and tax manager at Axium International. He also serves on the Rye Town Park Advisory Committee and the Rye Recreation Commission.
"I believe that my experience, coupled with my passion to keep Rye’s local government strong, will help me bring new ideas and new solutions to the Rye City Council. I am fully committed to serving all of the people of Rye," he said.
Mehler's wife Carin is a fourth-grade teacher at Osborn School, where she has worked since 1998. They have two daughters: Emily, a fifth-grader at Milton, and Rachel, a third-grader at Osborn. His family was attracted to Rye because of the school system, community and proximity to the park and Long Island Sound, he said. He walks his 2-year-old dog Ben in the park every morning and early evening.
"As a parent, homeowner, resident and someone who works in this great city, I want to assist in the process to make Rye the best place to live, visit, work and raise a family, he said. "Being on the Rye City Council will be my No. 1 priority. I will make sure that I am well informed on all issues facing Rye, will pay attention to details and will participate in discussions and express my opinions when voting."
Four seats on the City Council will be open in the election this November. Mayor Douglas French has also announced that he will not seek re-election.
