Area High School Students Experience Primary Politics In New Hampshire

MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Not only are Mamaroneck High School students covering political news in New Hampshire, but they are making news.

Mamaroneck High School's AP Government class departs for New Hampshire on Saturday. Nearly 100 students will volunteer for Republican and Democratic presidential campaigns, while 21 others are covering rallies and Tuesday's primary as journalists.

That's because Joe Liberti's 115 AP Government students have been all over the Granite State since Saturday covering presidential rallies and reporting news live via web and social media sites.

Liberti has incorporated the primary election trip before, but this is the first time the class has added a journalism component, according Debbie Manetta, a spokeswoman for Mamaroneck Union Free School District.

"We're hearing from the campaigns that our students are asking better questions than most of the seasoned news reporters,'' Manetta said on Monday as some students covered a rally for Democrat Bernie Sanders.

Most of Liberti's students will be volunteering for a presidential candidate, knocking on doors and trying to get people out to vote. All of the students post photos to Instagram twice daily, Manetta said.

Five are documenting the trip for the class with the rest volunteering for Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and Marco Rubio.

The four-day, three-night trip is led by Liberti, who built upon a highly-popular N.H. jaunt involving about 65 students in 2012.
