City of Rye firefighters and police responded to a report of the accident involving a 76-year-old woman about 3 p.m.

Rye Police Commissioner Michael Corcoran said the woman's car rolled back after she got out, knocked her down and rolled on top of her.

The woman was taken to Greenwich Hospital.

Four officers responded to the 2:49 p.m. 911 call, Corcoran said. Detective Jake Chittenden and Officer Joseph Cancel were the first on scene, followed by officers Angie Cyr and Randy Kapus.

The four RPD officers lifted the car off the woman, who was unresponsive under the car, Corcoran said.

"She still had the tire imprint on her after we lifted the car," Corcoran said. "She's alive but in critical condition. She was transported to Greenwich Hospital, but it doesn't look good."

Corcoran said her car keys were still in the ignition, but the car was turned off.

Police are still trying to figure out why the car rolled in the crowded, sloped parking lot.
