Scott McMahon, a six-year veteran of the force, suffered a broken leg and several other injuries that required surgery. He is also recovering from a head injury after he was struck by a Massachusetts driver on Saturday night near Mamaroneck Road on the southbound Hutchinson River Parkway.
According to police spokesman Kieran O’Leary, McMahon is in stable condition and recovering at the Westchester County Medical Center.
“We expect that there he will face a lengthy recovery,” he said. “It’s hard to put a firm timetable on it, but we believe that he will be out of work for a good period of time.”
McMahon was assisting a motorist whose car had broken down near Exit 22 about 9:30 p.m. Saturday, July 19. With the two right lanes blocked to give access to a tow truck, the officer was struck while standing alongside his vehicle.
According to police, no charges have been levied against the 63-year-old driver, although the investigation has not been concluded.
