On Tuesday, May 30, officers were dispatched to the school, where there was a report of a blue backpack containing unidentified suspicious items that was found near the play area.

Police said that a teaching aide told officers that she took her children out for recess at approximately 12:30 p.m. that day, when she spotted a blue backpack several feet from the front south side playground on the ground in a wooded area.

After making contact with the bag, the aide told police that she observed the suspicious items in the backpack - which have not been released by the department or school - and brought it to the main office. After arrival at Quaker Ridge, officers canvassed the area but found nothing else suspicious in the vicinity.

According to police, the items recovered include a Blue High Sierra backpack, the suspicious items and a small pink lighter. Officers said the bag was wet to the touch, and it is believed that the bag may have been left there for an extended period of time following the rainy weather in the area.

After collecting the evidence, police told Assistant Principal Jennifer Hefner that extra ride-bye were to be conducted on school grounds during the evening and midnight patrol tours. There have been no suspicious incidents reported to police at the school since.
