Dereck Coffee of Atlanta, Georgia, was killed when he was driving at a high rate of speed northbound in the right lane of the parkway when he attempted to move into the center lane, striking the rear of a car that was in the center lane, said Trooper Melissa McMorris.
After the crash, Coffee lost control of his 2001 Ford Ranger and struck the median guide rail and continued down an embankment, rolling several times before coming to rest, McMorris said.
The vehicle he hit, a Honda CRV, was being driven by 47-year-old William L. Collins of Yorktown.
Coffee was pronounced dead at the scene by the Westchester County Medical Examiner’s Office, McMorris said.
Collins and his passengers were not seriously injured and declined medical attention at the scene of the crash.
The collision remains under investigation.
