While on larceny patrol at approximately 4 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 6, officers spotted a suspicious man - later identified as 34-year-old William Jones - wearing a hooded sweatshirt, walking slowly and looking down driveways and side streets as he passed.

According to police, the officer proceeded to observe Jones from afar as he crisscrossed around several village roadways, continuing to walk slowly and peering down side streets suspiciously. Due to Jones’ suspicious behavior and the odd time of night, the officer proceeded to stop him and made contact.

Police said that upon making contact, Jones was immediately hostile and would not give a reason for why he was in the area or where he had come from. He stated he did not have any identification on him and after being asked several times he gave the responding officers his name and date of birth, which were confirmed by a New York State Benefits card that was later found on his person.

While speaking with Jones, the officer reported that there was a large bulge in his sweatshirt, and when he was told he would be pat down to check for weapons, Jones began walking backwards and reaching for his pocket, leading the officers to intervene and conduct “a hasty pat down for weapons,” with none being found.

Officers said that an NCIC check of Jones revealed an active arrest warrant out of New York City. During the course of the investigation, police said that Jones became “belligerent and hostile and was repeatedly reaching in his pockets and not following officers instructions.”

According to the officers, due to his increased hostility, they attempted to place Jones in handcuffs, which prompted him to resist by pulling away and locking his arms out in an attempt to avoid being detained. It ultimately took four officers to place him in handcuffs.

Police said that Jones refused to answer any questions while at Scarsdale Police Headquarters, including the suicide screening. While he was being fingerprinted, Jones continued being “hostile to officers, attempting to make fast movements to ‘scare’ officers and stating he knows (mixed martial arts).”

Jones was subsequently charged with resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and obstructing government administration. He was remanded to the Westchester County Jail after refusing to post $100 cash bail, stating that they should “keep him locked up.” Jones is due back in Scarsdale Village Court later this year to answer the charges.
