Osborn Elementary School teacher Carin Mehler is still reassigned. The district’s handling of the case was flawed from the beginning and its lack of resolution is costing Rye taxpayers dearly. So far, our board has wasted $243,720 (excluding legal costs) and if we don’t tell them to stop, they will continue to add $13,540 each month.

It is an irresponsible use of our tax money to keep such a highly qualified and experienced teacher at home. And there is no need. There are no laws, guidelines or state mandates telling our board to keep her reassigned. Litigation can be ongoing while she is back in the classroom. Standard practice is to reassign teachers before they are charged only if they pose a serious risk or threat.
Clearly that isn’t the case as on Nov. 21, 2014, the board offered Mehler a settlement, which included paying a fine. Mehler declined as the board refuses to indicate what she did wrong. This nonsense will only stop if a large group of Rye residents tell the board to stop (board@ryeschools.org). Go to the website www.reassigned.org and see for yourself how ridiculous it all is.
