RYE, N.Y. – Vito "Barney" J. Rossi, a resident of The Osborn in Rye, died Sept. 15. He was 96.
He was born Oct. 15, 1915, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Donato and Teresa Angelina Rossi. He grew up in Brooklyn and graduated from Boys High School in 1934. He received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Alabama in 1939.
Rossi served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942-45, attaining the rank of technical sergeant. On Nov. 24, 1945, he married Esther Palma at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Brooklyn.
Prior to retiring, Rossi was a senior accountant for S.C.M. Business Machines in New York City. He volunteered in the medical library at Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville and later at the Osborn market place.
Rossi is survived by two children, Charlotte (Richard) Casella, of Yonkers, and Michael (Elizabeth) Rossi, of West Harrison; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Esther Rossi; and several siblings.
Visitation is from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Coxe and Graziano Funeral Home in Mamaroneck. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Church of the Resurrection in Rye. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne.
