Virginia McCartney Newcombe, 92, Rye Resident

RYE, N.Y. — Rye resident Virginia McCartney Newcombe died on Saturday, April, 23. She was 92. 

Newcombe, formerly of Yonkers, graduated from the University of Mary Washington in three years and was recruited by the U.S. government to work as a cryptologist where she helped break the Soviet Union code. 

She later became a teacher, initially teaching French, then severely disabled children and eventually pre-kindergarten for 22 years at the Reform Church Nursery School.

Newcombe is survived by her children, David and his spouse Barbara, Sarah and her spouse Fred Sullo, Andrew and his spouse Chris and Martha and her spouse Jeff Reed; grandchildren Jeremiah, Micah, Elijah, Rhiannon, Elizabeth, Amy, Grace, Mary, Emma and Julia and two great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband Gordon I. Newcombe.

There will be a memorial service at Christ Church, 17 Sagamore Road, in Bronxville on Friday, April 29, at 11 a.m. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Christ Church.
