SOUTHBURY, Conn. - Philip J. McGovern of Southbury, formerly of Bedford, died Feb. 3. He was 81.
McGovern was born April 19, 1932, in Mt. Kisco, N.Y., to Philip and Mary McGovern, he lived most of his life in the Town of Bedford. He was a U.S. Army Korean War Veteran (1953 to 1955); a community leader in the Town of Bedford, serving as president of KVIS, and as a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals, and Boy Scouts organizer. He worked for the City of Rye, N.Y., from 1963 to 1995, retiring as city assessor and assistant city manager. He moved to Southbury in 2007.
McGovern is survived by his wife, Marianne Hayden McGovern; children, Philip, Monica, Joseph, and Peg (Jeff) Zelkowitz; six grandchildren; a great-grandson; sisters, Mary Appel (late Charles) of Nutley, N.J., and Theresa Terry (Richard) of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; many nieces and nephews; and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents.
Calling hours are Friday, Feb. 7 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the daily chapel of Sacred Heart Church. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Southbury. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Feb. 8 at 11 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Church, 910 Main St. South, Southbury.
