RYE, N.Y. -- Stephen Birmingham, 86, the prolific novelist, and author of “ ‘Our Crowd’: The Great Jewish Families of New York” died Sunday, Nov. 15, of cancer at his home in Manhattan, reported the New York Times.

A graduate of Williams College in 1950 with a degree in English, Birmingham worked as an advertising copywriter in New York for Needham Harper Steers, where he was credited with creating the slogan, “Never underestimate the power of a woman,” said the New York Times.

Birmingham served in the U.S Army in between ad agency work, which he left after finding success with magazine writing and his first novel, “Young Mr. Keefe,” about young people transplanted from Connecticut to California, was published in 1958, added the New York Times.

His books were often best sellers, and most of his nine full-length novels were also critically acclaimed, said the New York Times.

Birmingham and his wife, the former Jane Tillson, raised their three children in Rye.
