Clara Johnson, 85, Formerly Of Rye

RYE, N.Y. – Clara Johnson Merritt of Tampa, Fla., a former Rye resident, died July 24. She was 85.

The daughter of Milton and Clara Johnson, Merritt was born in Greenwich, Conn., and raised in Port Chester. She was married to Eugene F. Merritt and was a longtime resident of Rye before moving Tampa in 1981.

Merritt was predeceased by her husband, Eugene, in 1997, and a sister, Valerie Johnson. She is survived by two sons, Eugene (Barbara) and Paul (Armida); a daughter, Susan Benson; a sister, Sally (Henry) Hadigian; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, a niece, a nephew and a sister-in-law, Betty Moore, of Port Chester.

A committal service will be held at Greenwood Union Cemetery in Rye later this year. MacDonald Funeral Home in Tampa is handling local arrangements.
