Carmen J. Vecchiolla, 90, Rye Police Officer, World War II Veteran

RYE, N.Y. -- Carmen J. Vecchiolla, a lifelong resident of Rye, died Thursday, Feb. 26. He was 90.

Vecchiolla was born in Rye on July 16, 1924. He served in the Army in the Pacific Theater with Merrill's Marauders and was part of the Battle of Stillwell Road. He was a prisoner of war in Burma and the recipient of a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and World War II Victory Medal.

He returned home and continued to serve, becoming a member of the city of Rye police force in 1951. He retired in 1977. He was also a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 503, the American Legion and an active member of the Rye PBA.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" (nee Buttiglione); sons Donald (Betty) Vecchiolla and Anthony (Suzanne) Vickerson; grandchildren Katie and Daniel Vecchiolla and Caroline and Marshall Vickerson; and a great-grandchild, Harper Lee. He was predeceased by sisters Mary Diamond and May Snyder.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, March 7, at 11:15 am at Resurrection Roman Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warriors Fund. For more information or to place an online condolence, visit www.coxeandgraziano.com.
