Barbara Schmitt, 82, Formerly Of Rye

RYE, N.Y. -- A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 13, for Barbara H. Schmitt, 82, a longtime resident of Rye and former teacher at Mamaroneck High School,

Schmitte, 82, who most recently lived in Wilton, Conn., died at Norwalk Hospital on June 27. 

She was born in Queens to Howard Hammarth and Madeline (McGroarty) Hammarth.

She entered the Daughters of Wisdom, a Catholic religious order that ministers in education and health care.

She left the order in the late 1960s and married Ted Schmitt, a former Catholic priest. She was fondly remembered as a teacher at Mamaroneck High School.

After retiring from teaching, Schmitt enrolled in a master’s program at Pace University where she honed her skills as a career counselor and life coach. She led numerous seminars and workshops in the United States and abroad for other professionals. 

She is survived by her husband,  and her stepmother, Margaret (Twomley) Hammarth.

The memorial service will be at The Green at Cannondale, 435 Danbury Road in Wilton at 11 a.m.

Contributions in her name may be made to Daughters of Wisdom, 385 Ocean Ave., Islip, N.Y. or All Souls Unitarian Church, 1157 Lexington Ave. in Manhattan. The Magner Funeral Home in Norwalk is handling arrangements.
