Anna Gargan, 89, Rye Brook Receptionist

RYE BROOK, N.Y. – Anna L. Gargan of Rye Brook died Aug. 19 at Maplewood in Danbury, Conn. She was 89. 

Born Sept. 21, 1922 in Shamokin, Pa., she was the daughter of Valentine and Maryann Orzech Zyla. Gargan was raised and educated in Shamokin, where she married James M. Gargan Sr. on Sept. 28, 1946. He predeceased her on Sept. 5, 2007. 

Gargan worked as a receptionist at the Westchester County Department of Social Services in Rye Brook. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mercy Church and a member of the Catholic Daughters, Mothers Club, Westchester County American Legion Auxiliary, ARC and 8-40 Club. She was also the first president of the Rye American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. 

She is survived by four sons, James M. (Jackie) Gargan Jr., of Danbury, Conn., John (Nan) Gargan, of Bellingham, Mass., Thomas Gargan, of Rye Brook, and William Paul Gargan, of El Cajon, Calif.; a daughter, Anna L. Gargan, of El Cajon; and five grandchildren. Gargan was predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Carole Gargan. 

Visitation is from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Craft Memorial Home in Port Chester. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Port Chester. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Rye Brook.
