Sony Pictures announced late Wednesday that it has canceled the planned Dec. 25 release of the movie following a hacking attack and in the wake of threats against theaters that planned to show the movie.
The decision comes after four major cinemas dropped the film, a comedy which focuses on a pair of TV journalists, played by actors James Franco and Seth Rogen, who are recruited by the CIA in a plot to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Sony has “no further plans” to release the movie, either on VOD or DVD at this time, according to a report on Variety.
Sony's cancellation of the Christmas debut is expected to cost it more than $50 million, NBC News reported.
