The Coast Guard said that it is calling off the search for the cargo ship at sunset Wednesday, lohud.com reported.

Pusatere, 34, is a graduate of Archbishop Stepinac High School and SUNY Maritime College. Before the announcement, family and friends said they were clinging to hope, said lohud.com.

Twenty-eight American crew members and five Polish workers were on the 41-year-old ship that departed from Jacksonville, Florida, on Sept. 29, for Puerto Rico, lohud, com said.
