Kevin Gilliland drove up from the Bronx with friends and family for a day at Rye Playland to celebrate his niece's kindergarten graduation."We thought about going to Astroland, which would have been cheaper," said Gilliland. "But this place is closer."Gilliland hadn't heard about the Westchester County Board of Legislator's approval of a bill Tuesday that eliminates the $5 spectator fee for county residents while maintaining the $10 fee for non-residents. The bill must now be approved by County Executive Robert Astorino."That's not fair," he said. "It should be the same for everybody."The legislature proposed an earlier version of the bill that would have also lowered spectator fees for non-residents to $5. That proposal but was vetoed earlier this month by Astorino.
Whether Astorino approves the revised bill will have little consequence for visitors from outside the county like Gilliland."The costs are prohibitive to a lot of people--you've got gas, tolls, parking and then admission fees," said Gilliland. "They should really be thinking about how to induce people from the boroughs to come up. Trust me, they'll spend that extra money they save at the park."
