RYE, N.Y. -- Karen Schulz isn't panicking over Hurricane Irene, but recognizes the threat and has invited several coastal residents to stay in her house to ride out the storm.
"I'm preparing just in case they want to," said Schulz, a Rye resident, who was stocking up Saturday p on some last-minute items at the Post Road Market. "I'm buying a lot of paper plates because if we loose power I'm not doing dishes," she said.
Schulz, who lives at the top of Central Avenue, owns a generator, but hopes she won't have to use it. "Hopefully no trees fall."
Martha McGuire, owner of the 74-year-old Post Road Market, ordered extra milk, water and other staples at the beginning of the week to prepare for residents buying in bulk over the weekend.
"We were probably lucky because a lot people went to the big stores first," McGuire said.
Hurricane conditions are expected Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. Storms could produce heavy rainfall with a high near 76 degrees and north winds between 50 and 75 miles per hour. Winds could gust as high as 85 miles per hour during the day.
The Westchester County Technical Rescue Team will be on standby all weekend in the event they need to make emergency rescues.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority shut down all Metro-North trains on Saturday at noon. All Westchester Bee Line buses will also be out of service throughout the weekend.
