Rye Schools Release Lock Down, Cops Halt Manhunt

RYE, N.Y. – Rye High School, Middle School, and Midland Elementary School were all locked down for about two hours Tuesday afternoon as a manhunt was conducted by Rye Police and New York State Police.

According to an advisory released by Rye Police at 12:52 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, the city and state police officers were searching for a man described as a black male, approximately 6 feet tall, wearing a blue jacket. The advisory was categorized as a moderate threat.

Police said the man was last seen near Oakland Beach Deli and was headed towards the parkway. A resident of Rye Beach Avenue claims to have seen the man walking through a neighbor's yard at around 12:30 p.m. She told police that the man had braids in his hair.

Less than an hour after police released the advisory, the Rye City School District notified parents that Rye High School, Middle School and the Midland School had been locked down. At approximately 2:30 p.m., police sent an additional advisory announcing that the "subject is believed to be out of the area."

Police have also reported that the schools have released their lockdown and that the students will be dismissed on time.
