RYE, N.Y. -Sound Shore residents visited the Rye Free Reading Room Thursday night to celebrate Rye's first-ever Relay for Life being held this summer.
The overnight fundraiser , which is affectionately known as "Relay" by participants, is the largest cancer fundraiser in the nation and will be coming to Rye for the first time this June . Rye Town Park has agreed to host the event on June 8 and 9.
It marks the first Relay for Life event on the Sound Shore.
Michelle Dillon, the event co-chair, said the kickoff celebration was a great success and helped to spread the word about Relay through the greater Rye community.
"The kickoff went great," Dillon said.
"Relay for Life" is currently being held at 12 other locations throughout Westchester. Dillon said almost all of the kickoff participants, save for a handful, had never heard of Relay for Life before.
"Almost everybody there was a newbie and we are happy to share with them what Relay is all about," she said.
