Rye Prepares for 9/11 Commemoration

RYE, N.Y. -- Lisa Easton came by Friday afternoon to do some retouching on the 9/11 memorial gazebo she designed in preparation for Sunday's commemoration ceremony.A landscaping crew had already visited earlier and planted flowers and small trees around the memorial."It looks wonderful," said Easton.Sunday marks the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. A commemoration ceremony will be held that day on the Village Green from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. with a procession to the gazebo.

Fifteen members of the Rye community were lost on that day in 2001. Their names have been memorialized on plaques in the gazebo and will be read aloud Sunday.Easton worked closely with the families of the 15 to realize their vision for a suitable memorial, which took several years and was eventually completed in 2010."It was an honor to work on this project," she said.
