Born into a French family in the United States, du Bois used art to depict the culture and society around him. His work can be seen in the Smithsonian, the National Gallery of Art, the Phillips Collection, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, the Brooklyn Museum, the Whitney, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the University of Virginia Art Museum, as well as in the Rye Post Office.
The mural in the post office depicts Jay, who was the first Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. It was one of many murals commissioned by post office's across the country during the Great Depression. Jay spent his childhood in Rye educated there by his mother until he was eight years old, when he was sent to New Rochelle to study. After three years, he returned to homeschooling in Rye.
