Rye Police Warn Against Telephone Scams

RYE, N.Y. - The Rye Police Department released an advisory on Tuesday warning elderly residents about telephone scams involving wiring money to foreign countries.

According to the advisory that was released around 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, several incidents of fraud have been reported throughout Westchester and at least one took place in Rye.

"Typically, the caller will claim that the victim's son or grandson has been travelling overseas and has been involved in an accident or has been kidnapped, and needs money for ransom or to avoid being jailed," the advisory states.

The advisory continues by stating that some citizens have already fallen for the scam and have wired thousands to the thieves. The goal for law enforcement is to increase awareness regarding the scam in order to prevent future incidents.

Locals with elderly parents were encouraged to explain the predatory nature of this scam.
