RYE, N.Y. – Ice skaters and hockey players will have to wait a little longer to see if the Rye Playland Ice Casino will reopen again for the season after sustaining damage to the roof and boiler, according to Peter Tartaglia, director of marketing and communications for the Westchester County Parks Department.

“There’s a lot of damage from Sandy in two areas – we had four to five feet of water in the boiler room in the basement of the Ice Casino, the doors blew off and sand, water and fish came in, seriously there were fish,” said Tartaglia. “That’s been totally cleared out, but the boilers are not functioning properly. You can’t run anything without the boilers.”

In addition, the roof was severely damaged by high winds from Sandy, he said. The department is waiting to get a final cost assessment to fix the roof and the boiler by the end of the week.

“We know people are anxious, people who rent ice there have every reason to be anxious,” said Tartaglia. “At this point we can’t open the building unless we know that it’s safe for the public. In order to keep everything up and running to heat the building and to make sure the compressors don’t freeze that keep creating the ice, everything needs to be working properly.”
