Rye Opens Hurricane Sandy Emergency Shelter

RYE, N.Y. – An emergency shelter has opened at Rye Country Day School in the Upper Gym, the City of Rye announced Sunday night.

The school is located off Grandview Avenue and will be available as a shelter for those with no other options.

No evacuation had been issued as of 8 p.m. Sunday, but in the event of an emergency evacuation of coastal areas, the city is directing residents to drive from Forest Avenue to Oakland Beach Avenue, north on Boston Post Road to Old Post Road, to Interstate 95. These roads typically remain open during storms, while other areas including Milton Road, Playland Parkway, Midland Avenue and Boston Post Road are more susceptible to flooding. Signs have been posted along the best route to go.
