Rye OKs Bonds For Street Improvements, Reading Room

RYE, N.Y. – Results from voting machines impounded after last week's election show that voters approved both City of Rye bond proposals on the ballot, the city announced on its website.

The voting machines were impounded at the request of George Latimer, Democratic candidate in the State Senate's 37th District. However, his Republican opponent, Bob Cohen, conceded after polls closed because Latimer's margin was already high enough to call it.

Rye's Proposition One – a $1.68 million bond proposal for the construction, reconstruction and improvements to city streets – was approved by a vote of 4,600 to 1,341. The bond includes $330,000 to reconstruct Smith Street, $550,00 to improve intersections at Smith, Elm and Purchase streets, $250,000 to replace a sewer siphon under the Locust Avenue bridge and construct a new sewer line, $300,000 for a phase of a project to address the Boston Post Road retaining wall, and $250,000 to fund pedestrian safety enhancements throughout the city.

Proposition Two will pay for improvements to the Rye Free Reading Room, including installation of sprinklers, flood control improvements and improvements to comply with The Americans With Disabilities Act. The $176,000 proposal was approved 4,460 to 1,458.

Rye City Council member Julia Killian (R) was elected to the seat she was appointed to fill in June following Suzanna Keith’s resignation. She ran unopposed.
