RYE, N.Y. Rye Librarys Manager of Children Services Donna Harvey is on a mission: get more children to read by instilling the love of literature in them at an early age. With programs she helps to oversee, such as the Summer Fun Club, where children learn about different cultures and continents through storytelling, singing, movie showings, and craft making, she is well on her way to her goal. The Friday afternoon program is a hit among children and parents alike, drawing sizable crowds each week.
The Summer Fun Club is a collaborative summer library program sponsored by the Auxillary Board of the Rye Free Reading Room. The theme this year is One World, Many Stories.
With the theme this year, I envisioned passports traveling around the world, said Harvey. Every week the programming represents a different country.
Past activities include boomerang craft making while learning about Australia, and a movie showing of the animated Happy Feet to teach children about Antarctica.
The Summer Fun Club continues on year round as the Friday Fun Club. Meetings are held twice a month. To learn more, visit the Rye Librarys official website at: www.ryelibrary.org
