ALBANY, N.Y. -- Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law Monday a ban on smoking at MTA-operated outdoor train ticketing, boarding and platform areas, which applies to Metro-North.
"It is important that commuters are not unwillingly subject to the dangers of second-hand smoke while waiting on train platforms," Governor Cuomo said in a press release.
The ban will go into effect in 90 days and will be enforced by the MTA. Violators will be subject to a $100 fine.
For commuter Ross Shandra, the ban is a relief.
"It's surprising how times have changed," said Shandra, who rides Metro-North from New York City to Rye for work. "Before second-hand smoke wasn't really noticed. But it's always been a hazard. I definitely support the ban."
