Rye Arts Center Offers Summer Digital Media Class

The days of developing film in a dark room are shrinking into the past and Adam Levi knows that younger generations are embracing newer technologies.

"Whether you're dealing with analog or digital, there are still basic skills to learn," said Levi, arts school director at the Rye Arts Center.

While the center has no intention of getting rid of its dark room, it has upgraded its media lab with new Mac computers and software and will be offering several courses that will teach students to create with digital media.

There will be classes on digital photography, editing with Photoshop, music engineering with GarageBand, Flash animation, computer design and filmmaking with iMovie.

All these courses are designed for older children, teens and adults no matter their proficiency.

"We think it's helpful to bring together people with different skill levels because they help and learn from each other," said Levi.

The photography and editing classes run for seven weeks, beginning June 27. Some classes run for only a week.

Levi, also a visual artist and musician, has learned many of these new programs and says the classes aren't too focused on learning all the technical aspects and more about being creative.

"It's important not to get wrapped up in the tools," said Levi. "What we want to do is get to the heart of learning here, and that's creating art."
