PELHAM, N.Y. -- The human remains found in Mexico that may belong to 1999 Pelham High School graduate and world traveler Harry Devert will be on their way to labs in Mexico City for DNA testing by Tuesday, July 15, according to the family's lawyer.
Devert, 32, went missing on Jan. 25 while traveling in Mexico by motorcycle on his way to Brazil for the World Cup. Mexican authorities have found remains in two plastic bags near a motorcycle with an identification number matching that of Devert, according to multiple reports.
Information has been circulating in news stories from Mexican media outlets linking Devert's disappearance to drug cartel activity. The reports suggest he may have been mistaken for a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agent and kidnapped by members of the Los Guerreros, who are affiliated with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, based in Michoacan.
Multiple reports also state that large amounts of cocaine and marijuana were located with the remains and motorcycle.
Devert family spokeswoman Jackie Burrell confirmed to Daily Voice on Sunday, July 13, that Devert's mother, Ann, a New Rochelle resident, was on her way to Mexico to possibly identify her son's remains.
According to the family's attorney, Darren Delsardo, Ann Devert landed late Sunday night and is now cooperating with authorities to try to ascertain whether or not the corpse found is Harry.
Ann Devert is also working with representatives from Mexico's National Commission on Human Rights, who have dedicated themselves to helping her, Delsardo said.
According to Delsardo, because the remains appear to have been disinterred in some way, they must be sterilized to successfully carry out the DNA test.
He added that Ann continues to remain optimistic.
Even in the months after his disappearance, Devert's family and friends have held on to hope that he could be alive.
In 2013 alone, 81 American citizens were reported to the State Department as murder victims.
