John Mayo, Former Port Chester Resident, 80

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. -- John Mayo, a former Port Chester resident, died at his home in Delray Beach, Fla., on Sunday, Sept. 28. He was 80 years old.

Mayo was born, John Francis Meo, on Aug. 12, 1934, in Port Chester, to Philip and Ester Meo.

Mayo attended Port Chester High School. He served in the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division. He worked as a sheetrock taper. In January 1973, he married Clara Valona also of Port Chester. 

The Mayos moved to Delray Beach, Florida in 1995. Mayo worked for JCD Sports Group for more than 19 years working initially at Delray Beach Golf Club and then transferring to Lakeview Golf Club when the city bought the course in 1996. 

Mayo was an avid golfer and played golf weekly even until his last days. He was proud to be an American and to have served his country. 

Mayo is survived by his children Dominick Mayo of Mahopac, Patricia LaValle (Ferdinando) of Stamford, Conn; and John Mayo, Jr., (Anita); and his grandchildren, Christina Mayo, Marissa Mayo, Dominick Mayo, Alexander LaValle and John Mayo.

Mayo was predeceased by his wife; his brothers; Ralph Mayo, Frank Mayo and Phil Mayo and his sisters; Laura Clifford Holloway, Pauline Mayo and Pauline. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, Oct. 10, at 10:30 a.m., at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Port Chester. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Rye Brook. Condolences and memories can be provided at www.lorneandsons.com.
