Students From Boces Earn Awards At Health-Care Competition

RYE BROOK, N.Y. -- Ten students from the Southern Westchester BOCES Center for Career Services Emergency Medical Services Program came home with a number of prizes from the Health Occupations for Students of America (HOSA) Spring State Conference in Syracuse, N,Y. in April, including one first-place, two second-place and three third-place awards.

HOSA is a national student organization that is recognized by the U.S. Dept. of Education. The organization’s goal is to promote career opportunities in the health-care industry and to stress the importance of high-quality health-care delivery for all.

Christopher Leak of Pelham High School and Narenzo Kershaw of New Rochelle High School took first place as a team competing in the Emergency Medical Technician Division.

Placing second as a team at the April 17 event were  Brian Rolan and Matthew Venegas, both from New Rochelle High School, who also competed in the Emergency Medical Technician Division, as well as Zachary Feliciano, White Plains High School, and Louis DiSanctos, a student at the BOCES Rye Lake campus, who competed as a team in the First Aid/CPR Division.

Third-place was awarded to Elena Kocaj of Edgemont High School and Jessica Mulholland of New Rochelle High School, who competed as a team in the Emergency Medical Technician Division, in addition to Antonio DiNardo of White Plains High School and Alyse Knox of New Rochelle High School, who competed as a team in the First Aid/CPR Division.

DiNardo also won a third-place medal in the Interviewing Skills Division.

“They worked very hard this year to prepare and practice for the state competition. We are very proud of them,” said Hanifah Muhammad, the BOCES EMS instructor.

BOCES EMS students have been competing in the HOSA competition since 2010.
