Emergency Services Gather in Rye for 'Fleet Day'

Police, firefighters and paramedics from across Westchester converged in the parking lot of Rye Playland Friday for the county's annual Fleet Equipment and Demonstration Day.

"Today is about enhancing the overall preparedness of emergency response services in Westchester County," said Kieran O'Leary, Westchester County Police spokesmen. "It's important to know what equipment everyone has and how they can help in the event of an emergency."

The event was an opportunity for various departments to network and share information on current response capabilities and included demonstrations of the county's bomb squad robot and the jaws of life by Yonkers police and fire departments.

Vendors also showed the latest equipment and vehicles on the market, such as three-wheeled motorcycles and supercharged police interceptors.

The event also a featured a tribute to the first responders of 9/11 who died both at the scene and afterward due to medical complications resulting from their service. A wreath was displayed between the American and Westchester County flags as the Police Emerald Society of Westchester Pipes and Drums played "Amazing Grace."

"We will never forget those that were lost," said county Emergency Services Commissioner Tony Sutton. "I know as a county we're better prepared to detect and deter terrorism."
