On Monday, signs outside the store declared "Closed For Remodel."
An employee answering the phone at D'Agostino's corporate headquarters in Larchmont said the closing is not permanent. She would not elaborate or answer other questions.
As D'Agostino employees showed up for work at the Rye Brook Market on Monday afternoon, they also were caught by surprise.
"I'm just finding out myself,'' one supermarket worker said as a manager let her into the supermarket's front entrance, where the doors and windows were masked with brown paper. The manager told Daily Voice to call corporate headquarters, which did not return messages.
The Rye Ridge location is D’Agostino’s only store outside of Manhattan. A sign above the Rye Brook Market entrance declares, "Family owned & operated since 1932."
On April 20, the New York Post summarized the chain’s woes in an article titled, “New York’s original grocer struggling to survive.”
The Rye Ridge Shopping Center is located at the intersection of Ridge Street and Bowman Avenue. There are more than 70 boutiques, restaurants, life essentials and professional offices adjoining the supermarket.
