Crane Road Bridge Closures Will Affect Scarsdale

SCARSDALE, N.Y. – The $39.4 million project to replace the deteriorated Crane Road Bridge on the Bronx River Parkway along the Scarsdale-Greenburgh line began Monday.

The project has been in the works for more than five years, and has been the focus of countless public meetings and debates. The work is scheduled to be done in four stages over a 34-month period, with an estimated completion date of spring 2015.

The current bridge – which was built in 1924 – will be operational during most of the construction, though there will be periodic lane closures. The Bronx River Parkway exit to Crane Road will be closed for a year starting next spring.

“Initially, there will be very little impact locally,” County Traffic Engineer Kevin Roseman said. “As we get toward the fall and put the beams in, there will be some nighttime closures. Next year there will be a full-time closure of one northbound lane.”

When completed, the bridge will feature wider lanes and shoulders, including a northbound deceleration lane to Crane Road. Sidewalks will be added and the southbound Metro-North platform will be reconstructed.

In a press release announcing the beginning of the project, County Executive Robert P. Astorino said that the construction will help create jobs.

“The bridge is almost a century old and must be replaced now to ensure the safety of the estimated 30,000 motorists who use it each day,” he said. “We will do our best to minimize the inconvenience the construction will cause. On a positive note, it will create approximately 400 construction jobs.”

The first stage is scheduled to take approximately 10 months. Workers are constructing three of the six new concrete piers and deck above, and are building a portion of the new railroad bridge. There will be nighttime tree removals, and part of the parking lot used by merchants in Scarsdale near the train station will be used to house construction equipment.

The Pipeline Road entrance ramp to the southbound Bronx River Parkway will be closed in July and will not re-open until the project is completed in about three years.

The second stage, which is to begin in May 2013, is scheduled to take six months. Workers will construct two more concrete piers, and one northbound lane on the Bronx River Parkway will be closed. The exits to Crane Road will also be closed.

The third stage, planned for November 2013, is scheduled to be finished around May 2014. One southbound lane will be closed, along with the Crane Road exits and the one northbound lane.

The final stage, which is planned for a May 2015 finish, involves the completion of the bridge’s concrete piers and “mushroom” structure. Workers will demolish the existing bridge structures and construct the northern portion of the railroad bridge. The Crane Road exits will re-open, but one northbound and southbound lane will remain closed.

The $39,425,000 project is being funded with 80 percent Federal Highway Bridge and Rehabilitation and Replacement funds, 15 percent state funds, and 5 percent county capital funds. The replacement bridge will resemble the original design.
