County Presents Playland Pathway Proposal to Rye

RYE, N.Y. – Members of the community heard and weighed in on a presentation from the county Planning Department this week that proposed implementing safer bike and pedestrian routes along Playland Parkway and other sections of the city.

Landscape architect Alex Berryman said the site plan divides the 2.65-mile route into three segments. The first segment is a signed, shared roadway that begins at the border of the Rye Metro-North train station and continues along Theodore Fremd until it intersects with North Street. The second segment runs along North Street until it meets Playland Parkway, and the third segment runs down Boston Post Road to Playland.

"It's still in a preliminary stage, but this is the route we think the bikeway and the pedestrian pathway will take," Berryman said.

The county plan does not call for additional building along segments one and two of the pathway, and will instead just encourage it. However, the county is looking to build a trailway along segment three between Old Post Road and Boston Post Road.

The county will also implement "sharrows," shared roadway symbols painted on the pavement, at points on the pathway to make both cyclists and drivers aware that they are sharing the road.

Rye Mayor Doug French spoke about the importance of taking a bottom-up approach and doing the project the right way.

"To connect the key destinations around Rye is critical to this community, our property values and how we live our life," French said. "We are ready now as a bottom-up approach, but it has to be done the right way."
