WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- The National Institutes of Health recently awarded grants totaling $517,785 to Burke Rehabilitation and Research in White Plains and to SUNY Purchase.

Burke Rehabilitation and Research was awarded $328,785 to further research a  a novel therapeutic target for treating Alzheimer’s disease, called Benfotiamine, that is not being tested anywhere else in the world.

Benfotiamine is very effective in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease and is safe in humans. The trial will begin in the fall.

Purchase College was awarded $189,000 for its Baccalaureate and Beyond, or B&B, program, which is part of a larger program called Bridges that Increases the number of underrepresented minority, low-income and first-generation students who transfer to four-year colleges after completing their degrees at Rockland and Westchester community colleges.

“Groundbreaking scientific research happening in Westchester and Rockland greatly benefits our community,” U.S. Rep. Nita M. Lowey, D-Westchester/Rockland, said in a statement. “From encouraging more students to study science, which can lead to good, high-paying jobs, to research into Alzheimer’s disease, federal funding for scientific fields is one of the smartest investments we can make.”
